Season Concerts 2013-2014

Consortium Carissimi: Season VI

Program I – Musica di Salamone Rossi

Salamone Rossi was an Italian Jewish violinist and composer and a transitional figure between the late Italian Renaissance period and early Baroque. His first published work (released in 1589) was a collection of 19 canzonettes, short, dance-like compositions for a trio of voices with lighthearted, amorous lyrics. Rossi also flourished in his composition of more serious madrigals, combining the poetry of the greatest poets of the day with his melodies. In 1600, in the first two of his five madrigal books, Rossi published the earliest continuo madrigals, an innovation which partially defined the beginning of the Baroque era in music.  This concert is comprised of Rossi’s beautiful sacred music sung in Hebrew, his delightful secular madrigals in Italian, as well as instrumental music for violins and continuo period instruments.

Program II – L’Oratorio Romano

Bonifazio Graziani was a composer known as one of the “best kept secrets” of the early Roman Baroque period.  He composed sacred choral works for Roman Jesuits around the mid-seventeenth century and his talent ranked him amongst the greatest of his contemporaries. This concert showcases the only two existing oratories of Graziani as well as six of his motets – and all in honor of the 350th Anniversary of his death. Included in this concert are the oratories Adae and Filli prodigi (Adam and The Prodigal Son) which will feature 13 early-music specialists that include eight singers (three sopranos, two tenors and one baritone, two bass) and five instrumentalists (viola di gamba, lute, theorbo, portative organ and harpsichord).
