It was while studying the recorded history of jazz that Jeff found himself drawn to the noble sound of the double bass. Inspired by masters such as Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, and Charlie Haden, he took up the difficult instrument, receiving instruction from Anthony Cox, Robert Anderson of the MN Orchestra, and briefly with Rodney Whittaker and the late Dennis Irwin. His stint as jam session bassist for the musically fertile venue Brilliant Corners brought his playing to the attention of area musicians, and he became a sought-after freelance bassist.
He has performed with Wessel Anderson, Marcus Printup, Ron Miles, Tim Armacost, Dennis Spears, Debbie Duncan, Connie Evingson, Patty Peterson, Pete Whitman, Sophia Shorai, Chris Thompson, Rick Carlson, Carei Thomas, Chris Lomheim, and the late Bobby Peterson. Jeff has collaborated in modern dance premieres with Alvin Ailey alum TUDance and in the “Empire at Twilight” music/dance series at the Southern Theater. He was featured in the Orchestra Hall premiere of Jeremy Walker’s “7 Psalms” in January 2016 and will be performing in a new piece with Consortium Carissimi this November.
Jeff can be heard currently playing with the Atrium Jazz Ensemble at Orchestra Hall; the Gypsy jazz trio Sidewalk Cafewhich he co-leads; and a longstanding weekly duo with pianist/vocalist JoAnn Funk at the historic St. Paul Hotel.
